The Icom IC-M804 is a Class E DSC MF/HF (SSB) marine transceiver for offshore and ocean-going sailors and for commercial vessels that do not need GMDSS. It is CE marked under the European Radio Equipment Directive (RED). This product is the radio only, in a 12 V (#11) or 24 V (#21) version.
Features
Class E DSC with Distress Button - The IC-M804 meets the ITU-R M.493-15 and ETSI EN 300 338-4 Class E DSC regulations and is based on Icom's MED-approved GM800 Class A GMDSS radio, with almost identical features and functions except for the DSC class. In an emergency, pressing the large independent Distress button, which has a spring-loaded cover, sends a digital distress signal with your GNSS position to other ships and coast stations.
DSC Watch-Keeping Receiver - A dedicated DSC watch-keeping receiver continuously scans the six DSC distress frequencies in rotation. You can store 100 MMSI numbers for DSC calls (75 individual and 25 group), each with a 10-character name.
Wide-Angle Colour Display with Night Mode - The high-resolution 10.9 cm colour TFT display has a viewing angle of almost 180° and shows characters and function icons clearly. Night mode keeps it easy to read in the dark.
Intuitive User Interface - The directional keypad and soft keys make operation simple, with the most common functions on the soft keys at the bottom of the display. The large ten-key pad lets you enter channel numbers and MMSI numbers with their names quickly.
Instant Replay - The radio automatically records the last 2 minutes of received audio, so you can play back a call you did not hear clearly and not miss an incoming call.
Built for the Marine Environment - The IC-M804 has passed Icom's environmental testing and quality assurance processes and is designed for reliable, corrosion-resistant operation in harsh marine conditions. The remote controller is waterproof to IPX7 (1 m for 30 minutes).
Integrated GNSS Receiver - The built-in GNSS receiver (GPS, GLONASS and SBAS) gives position, course, speed and UTC time through the supplied GNSS antenna with its 5 m cable.
NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183/-HS - Over NMEA 2000 the IC-M804 exchanges GNSS data, DSC call information, radio information and PGN list data on the network. It can also convert NMEA 0183/-HS position data to NMEA 2000 data for other equipment.
HM-214H Hand Microphone - The supplied HM-214H hand microphone has a programmable button for quick access to the function you use most.
Power and Reception - Icom rates the output power at the output of the AT-141 antenna tuner: 125 W PEP (85 W PEP from 1.6 to 3.9999 MHz). The radio receives continuously from 0.5 to 29.9999 MHz, using an advanced RF direct sampling system.
Installation
The IC-M804 main unit is installed separately from the remote controller, and the two are connected with the supplied control cable. The IC-M804 needs an antenna tuner such as the Icom AT-141 automatic antenna tuner, connected to the main unit with the OPC-1465 shielded control cable (10 m); both are listed under Parts & Accessories.
An HF antenna (for example a whip or an insulated backstay) and an RF ground, such as a bronze ground plate, are needed and are not included. As the connection diagram shows, the main unit also has a connection for a separate HF antenna for DSC reception.
The 12 V version runs on 10.8-15.6 V DC and the 24 V version on 21.6-31.2 V DC (negative ground). In transmit, the current drain is up to 40 A on 12 V and 20 A on 24 V, so plan the DC wiring for this current. To flush-mount the controller in a panel, use the optional MB-75 flush mount kit.
