W.Smith & Son
William Smith started making needles in Redditch, England, in 1835, and the family business he founded still produces sailmaker's needles and leather sewing palms in its own Redditch workshops.
For hand repairs to sails and canvas, choose from items such as:
- Sailmaker's needles, hand finished with a reduced edge in high carbon steel
- Assorted packs: an envelope of 5 needles from 13 to 19 swg, or a tube of 20 from 14 to 18 swg
- Leather sailmaker's palms in right and left hand versions
- The lightweight No. 2.5 professional palm, plus No. 9 mediumweight and No. 11 heavyweight palms with thumb protection
A palm drives the needle through layers of cloth that fingers cannot, so the two belong together in any sail repair kit.
